"The Interview with Michelle
Davis"
THE ROCK:
Who is Michelle Davis, tell us something
about you?
Davis: Michelle Davis.
THE ROCK:
Where are you from, and currently residing?
Davis: Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.
That is where I reside now.
THE ROCK:
Are there any other writers in the family?
Davis: Yes, but no one is published. I'm
encouraging them, though! My cousins write, and my children love to
write as well.
THE ROCK:
When did you start writing?
Davis: At a very young age. I've always
loved writing, but I finally took it seriously a few yeas ago.
THE ROCK:
What prepared you to become an author?
Davis: Life. Living it, seeing it and being
amazed at how connected we all really are by our similar experiences.
THE ROCK:
What inspired you to become a writer?
Davis: Some of my life's events, and reading
other author's works.
THE ROCK:
What inspired you to write your book?
Davis: Life experience, and some of the
people closest to me who had their own stories to tell.
THE ROCK:
Tell us about your newest creation. What is the premise?
Davis: It's the story of a young woman
who has multiple children and just as many issues. She's a victim of
childhood molestation and neglect, and grows up with a dysfunctional
state of mind. It takes a few bumps on the head before she figures out
how to be empowered by her past, and begins to see how simple acknowledgement
shapes her future into something positive and healthy.
THE ROCK:
Any publishing contracts in the working?
Davis: No, but I got my fingers crossed!
THE ROCK:
Have you ever self-published? Why or why not?
Davis: Yes, that's how I published my first
book. I did it because
I'm a go-getter, and didn't see the logic in waiting for someone to
pick up my work.
THE ROCK:
What are "traditional publishers" looking for?
Davis: Familiarity of work, something that
can generate sales quickly. It's competitive out there in the literary
world, and traditional publishers are looking for a hitch that can catch
on quickly.
THE ROCK:
If you were a publisher, what would be your niche? Why?
Davis: Real-life stories. Because people
can relate to it in one form or another. And for those who can't, they
read it and think "wow, I never knew it was like that ".
THE ROCK:
For an author, is having a publishing contract with a "traditional
publisher" important professionally? Why?
Davis: Absolutely. Because it says someone
is taking a chance on you, and believes in your work. Because they are
investing in you, they will make sure your work is at its best, and
will help to facilitate its success.
THE ROCK:
What are some of your professional and personal achievements?
Davis: Well, publishing my first book,
of course. Also, starting up a non-profit organization, which I hope
to have up and running this year. I went back to school a few years
ago, so I hope to have my degree this year as well.
THE ROCK:
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Davis: I have a few. J. California Cooper
is one. I also like Bebe Moore Campbell. There are a lot of new authors
that I've had the chance to read their work as well.
THE ROCK:
Where do you want to be in 5 years?
Davis: On the wave of my professional writing
career and running my agency.
THE ROCK:
Where can readers find you?
Davis: www.michelleakamimi.com
THE ROCK:
Thank you very much, Ms. Davis.
