Sharon Rae North
THE ROCK:
What was your motivation to get into the music business?
North: I’ve always wanted to
be a singer. Actually, I’ve always considered myself a singer.
So, it only seemed a natural progression to actually perform. And,
I’m so busy lately with gigs that I’m almost losing
track of them. But, that’s a GOOD THING!!
THE ROCK:
How do you classify your music?
North: It’s jazz and standards.
Those types of songs accommodate my range, style and my personality
so well. Plus, I love singing them. But, I’m versatile, so
I’ll also throw in a few of the R&B songs that I like,
and give them a jazz flavor. I did a private party at the Penthouse
Club in Buckhead recently and I put a jazz spin on "Happy Birthday".
It was really cool.
THE ROCK:
Who are your favorite artists?
North: That’s a tough one. There
are so many fabulous vocalists, past and present who I really enjoy.
But, if I had to pick… and obviously I do in order to answer
this question… at the top of the list is the incomparable
Etta James. I do several of her songs, including "At Last"
in my show. I also love Nancy Wilson, Oleta Adams, Lalah Hathaway,
Diana Krall. I also have quite a few male vocalists who I enjoy,
such as Will Downing, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, and Luther Vandross.
Truth be told though, my favorite group of all time is George Clinton
and Parliament Funkadelic. Who woulda thunk it!!
THE ROCK:
What is your purpose in doing what you do?
North: Singing makes me happy. When
I’m singing/performing, I’m completely in my element.
It’s just a feeling of serenity, release, joy, euphoria, the
whole gamut. And, when I have a good show (which is most of the
time, since I work with such great musicians), that’s ballgame!
THE ROCK:
What record company are you with?
North: My company, Northstar Entertainment
Group, LLC is the label my first CD is on. I had planned to shop
the CD to some other labels, but it began selling really well and
getting some airplay in certain markets, so I never ended up taking
it to that level. I may try with the next CD, which is in the works
right now.
THE ROCK:
What three words best describe Sharon Rae North?
North: Wow, just three words! Let’s
see. Hmmm! Introspective, Creative, Loving. You could’ve at
least given me 5-10 words. (smile)
THE ROCK:
Where does Ms. North see herself five years from now?
North: Definitely doing more singing.
Always singing!! I also hope to have a few more books under my belt
by then as well. That would be great!
THE ROCK:
Thank you, Ms. North and best wishes.
