Niela Magwood
THE ROCK:
What was your motivation to get into the
music business?
NIELA: When I was in Germany on campus,
I ran into two
guys playing the guitar and congos. I started singing
a Lenny Kravitz song along with their playing. People
started gathering around and from that defining
moment, I knew what I wanted to do.
THE ROCK:
How do you classify your music?
NIELA: Trip Rock Soul. It’s a
term I came up with to
define all three genres of my music.
THE ROCK:
Who are your favorite artists?
NIELA: Sade, Prince, Massive Attack(UK),
Sly & the
Family Stone, Jewel, and many others.
THE ROCK:
What is your purpose in doing what you
do?
NIELA:
At first, it was the creative part. Then one
day, we were doing a show and this Middle Eastern
woman started crying. It was in such a spiritual way;
it made me so happy. Touching other people is the
most important thing to me.
THE ROCK:
What record company are you with?
NIELA: I’m independent.
THE ROCK:
What is the hardest thing about trying to
get signed by a major record label?
NIELA:
First, it’ just getting them to listen to your
music. Second, they always want to change something
about you… your look, your sound, your music, or a
band member.
THE ROCK:
What three words best describe Niela
Magwood?
NIELA:
There are two of me. Onstage- Aware,
sensuous, and intimate. Offstage- Domesticated,
integrity, and well-rounded.
THE ROCK:
What advice would you give to anyone who
wants to enter the music industry?
NIELA: Don’t compromise yourself!
THE ROCK:
Where does Niela Magwood see herself five
years from now?
NIELA: Having autonomy over my career.
I want to be
free to do what I love to do.
THE ROCK:
Thank you Niela, and best wishes.
NIELA: Thank you.
