Lori
Anne Williams
THE
ROCK: What was your motivation to get into the music
business?
Lori Williams: I have performed all
of my life and have always wanted to be a professional musician.
Watching live performances has always motivated me and has given
me the extra drive to perfect my craft as a vocalist.
THE
ROCK: How do you classify your music?
Lori Williams: I am a jazz vocalist
and would categorize the music that I perform as spiritual music
- music that touches the soul.
THE
ROCK: What attracted you to this profession?
Lori Williams: I love to sing - so
this profession is more of a calling and personal passion.
THE
ROCK: What made you decide to go into business for
yourself?
Lori Williams: I perform with other
professional groups on a regular basis; but enjoy booking for Lori
Williams and Friends because I like the idea of collaborating with
different musicians for various events (weddings, corporate affairs,
etc.). Also, having worked in the entertainment industry (Dimensions
Entertainment, Capital Records, and several radio stations), I have
been given the opportunity to see how the industry works from both
sides. I enjoy the challenge of putting a show together and seeing
it through to the end. All of the musicians who I have worked with
are top notch. I have been blessed.
THE
ROCK: Why do you believe entrepreneurship to be so
important?
Lori Williams: Entrepreneurship is
the key to self-empowerment.
THE
ROCK: What do you find are some of the upsides of
owning a business?
Lori Williams: Being able to negotiate
and finalize deals are definite
positives to owning a business of this sort. I also enjoy traveling
and
networking with other professional artists.
THE
ROCK: What about the downsides?
Lori Williams: If I overbook engagements,
there can be physical fatigue due to the close timing of the events.
Also, when a client does not comply with details outlined in the
contract, some re-negotiations must take place - which causes me
to have to think about business matters instead of concentrating
solely on the music. This can be a little stressful. But all in
all - things usually work out. (Thank God!)
THE
ROCK: What is your best advice to someone who wants
to start a business in the music industry?
Lori Williams: Pray first and then
seek advise from others who have done what you're trying to do.
My motto is: " Words are powerful...speak wisely. "
Always be kind to those you meet and remember that learning is constant
- you are never too old to gain knowledge.
THE
ROCK: Who are your favorite artists?
Lori Williams: My favorites artists
are Dianne Reeves, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Shirley Horn, and
Nancy Wilson.
THE
ROCK: What is your purpose in doing what you do?
Lori Williams: I want to touch people
with the songs that I sing. I hope they leave the shows feeling
uplifted.
THE
ROCK: Are you signed to a record company? If not,
were you signed?
Lori Williams: No, I am not signed
with a record company. My dream record company is Blue Note Records.
THE
ROCK: What is the hardest thing about trying to get
signed by a major record label?
Lori Williams: I would think the competition
from other musicians would be the biggest challenge of getting signed.
THE
ROCK: What attribute(s) is needed to become a successful
entertainer?
Lori Williams: You need determination
and love for your craft to become a successful entertainer.
THE
ROCK: What three words best describe you?
Lori Williams:
1. Passionate
2. Sensitive
3. Talented
THE
ROCK: What do you expect from your audience after
a breath-taking performance?
Lori Williams: I want a spiritual connection
that makes them want to hear more. When the music is right - everyone
knows it.
THE
ROCK: What is driving you to success?
Lori Williams: My daughter is my inspiration.
I believe in my abilities; but it means more for Lauren to say,
" Mom, you did a great job. "
THE
ROCK: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
Lori Williams: I envision having my
own CD and touring more.
THE
ROCK: Where can we find you on the Internet?
Lori Williams: Please visit www.lorijazz.com
THE ROCK: Thank you, Ms. Lori Williams
and best wishes.
